Design and Historical Research

This project is an exploration of my cultural identity and what it means to be Italian. Through intensive research and interviews I chose collage as my medium to break preconceived notions and weave together my personal experiences with my family’s history. I have placed three chairs around the table representing myself, my father, and my grandmother. Above the table, a portrait collage hangs, tying love, sacrifice, family, and what it means to be Italian.

The placecards I wrote read:

I carry our memories and culture with pride, placing them into my art, piece by piece.
Every photograph holds weight — family archives, photographs from my trip to Italy, and images of Bergamo, where my family lives.
These stories, these moments, these places — they have shaped who I am.
What you see on the wall is more than a collage; it is a portrait of family, culture, and love.
It is a reflection of what matters most to me: connection, belonging, and family.

This art, this table, this — it all begins with you.
The man who taught me to take pride in where we come from.
You find beauty in the simplest things: a home-cooked bowl of pasta, a full table, a loud house overflowing with love.
When I walked the streets of Italy, I carried you with me — your stories, your laughter, your roots.
This piece is for you — for the culture you protect, the love you pass down, and the joy you share.
Ti amo.

Your love echoes through every photograph and every piece of this collage.
You passed down more than recipes — you passed down resilience, warmth, and the belief that family always comes first.
This is your legacy — family, culture, and the kind of love that holds us together. This table, this art, this celebration of where
we come from — it all honors you.
Grazie, Nonna. You are the beginning of this story.
